Predicting the Future with a Can of Folgers

Linda who was a very nice young lady and excellent student arrived for class one day looking very upset.  I asked her what was wrong and she told  me  that she was in a great deal of trouble at home and that her parents  had told her before school that morning that she was grounded for two weeks.

I asked what had happened, she said that she had hit her younger brother in the head with a two-pound can of coffee  on the way home from the grocery store last night.   The results of which had temporarily knocked him out, given him a big black eye and  lead to a trip to the emergency room.

Taken somewhat aback because she was a fairly passive, very controlled and well-mannered student in class and hitting someone with can of Folgers was not something I would have expected.  I asked why she had hit her brother with the can of coffee?   And she answered that if I ever had him in my class I would understand.

I did and she was right!

About safrisri

I have been a teacher since 1971 and have taught at all educational levels from pre-school to college. My college degree is general science which I arrived at after 5 years and 5 different majors. A degree as it turns out, almost as valuable and in demand as one in Neo-Bulgarian Mythology. I have been around education for around 40 years and can remember when teaching was a pleasant, happy and creative job and our schools were the same. My writings will reflect on my past mistakes and successes and what my students have taught me about education.
