8 Stolen Thoughts About Political Debates

I would replace the word “pride” with “words”,the word “conceit” with “deceit” and the word “boast” with “Lie,” in the following quote,  but either way the quote still it fits!

“Let your actions always speak for you, but be forever on guard against the terrible traps of false pride and conceit that can halt your progress.  The next time you are tempted to boast, just place your  fist in a full pail of  water  and  when you remove  it the hole remaining will give you a correct measure of your importance.”……..Og   Mandino

In Texas they might say,   “words and thoughts from the debates are often ,  “All Hat, no Cattle”.”

The kids who raced and fixed cars in my youth might say of the debates that they are ,  ” All Show, No Go.”

Mark Twain tells us that there are,” Lies, Damned Lies and Statistics.” I would paraphrase that there are, ” Liars, damned liars, and politicians.”

Quentin Crisp says, ” It’s no good running a pig farm badly for 30 years while saying, “ Really, I was meant to be a ballet dancer.” By then, pigs will be your style.  Can we expect that politicians will really change their habits after election?

It often  seems as Jim Jordan says that politicians continually tell us ,”Pay no attention to what I have said and done in my previous political life for I was lying and pandering “then.”

And as to the continuing public political  discourse I like Ralph Waldo Emerson and Alfred Lord Tennyson who said, ”

“What lies behind you and what lies in front of you, pales in comparison to what lies inside of you.”

RWE

“Ring out false pride in blood and place,The civic Slander and the spite.”

To me, it seems as though the debating parties have become as parents locked in a nasty divorce battle while our country who plays the part of the child sits between them and is hit by every blow, many undeserved,  that the oblivious parents  aim at each other in their desire to win at any cost.

About safrisri

I was a school teacher until retirement. I have taught at all educational levels from pre-school to college. My college degree is general science which I arrived at after 5 years and 5 different majors. A degree as it turns out, almost as valuable and in demand as one in Neo-Bulgarian Mythology. I have been around education for around 40 years and can remember when teaching was a pleasant, happy and creative job and our schools were the same. Now I'm the guy sitting on the porch with an opinion on everything.
