Nannies,Video Games, Boots, and Terrorism

It is apparent that the Nanny concept of government in the U.S. has once again overreached itself. Apparent success in controlling drink size, cooking oil, health care, school curriculum, lunch programs, tobacco, alcohol, religion in the schools, and etc. emboldened all the elected nannies in the U.S. to believe that they now have the right to control the actions of sovereign nations, abhorrent or not, on the other side of the world. Basing their actions on the at best flimsy excuse of national self-interest or security.
I can remember when the intellectual elite stood up as one and sneered that Bush was acting like a cowboy. Where are those people now? As an ex school teacher I understand the setting of limits and the need for consistency but I also painfully learned that at times when dealing with difficult situations you must back off and say I made a mistake, clarify your goals, reset your limits and define exactly what will result from further non-compliance. It is time for our government to do that now!
And while I’m at it, the use of, “no boots on the ground” to somehow make this right with the American public, drives me nuts. It goes directly to why terrorism exists. Terrorism exists because terrorists do not have the power or the means to strike back directly or effectively at their attackers causing them instead to attack whatever part of the offending group they can reach. Attacks via missiles or drones, no matter how effective they may be, that are controlled from an air conditioned facility in sunny southern California not only acerbate our terrorism problem but contribute to the sense on non-responsibility too many of us seem to have for our actions that result in numerous non-combatant deaths.
When men stood face to face and killed each other with hand weapons they had to live with the smells, sounds and sights of carnage and the horror of war was made clear to all through their memories and accountings , as I am sure it still is to our troops on the ground in the middle east and their families.
My point is that when we have no real, “dog in the fight,” there are “no boots on the ground”, war is waged by video controller and we can kill with no immediate emotional or physical risk somehow it makes it all too easy to contemplate and deliver death and that is wrong, because even as it saves our lives and sanitizes war for us it provides terrible impetus and justification for more terrorism from those we attack.

About safrisri

I have been a teacher since 1971 and have taught at all educational levels from pre-school to college. My college degree is general science which I arrived at after 5 years and 5 different majors. A degree as it turns out, almost as valuable and in demand as one in Neo-Bulgarian Mythology. I have been around education for around 40 years and can remember when teaching was a pleasant, happy and creative job and our schools were the same. My writings will reflect on my past mistakes and successes and what my students have taught me about education.
