Are Sports Really Good For Kids?

  1. I attended a kids basketball game a few days ago. At the end of the game one of the 9 year old players on the victorious team stood in the middle of the court posing with one finger in the air an and glowering at the losing team while pointing at the scoreboard with the other hand He stood there for quite a while. I no longer wonder where kids learn that behavior, they learn it from watching sports on TV. When I was growing up it was okay to win or even to lose but humiliating an opponent was just not done because it reflected a weakness of character that nobody wished to display. Silent satisfaction perhaps with a brief smug look was the most that was allowed not because parents or coaches mandated it but because our internal spirit of sportsmanship demanded it. In truth our true character is not defined by what we do or say after the battle is done or before it begins, it is what we say and do in the heat of battle that is a true reflection of our character

About safrisri

I was a school teacher until retirement. I have taught at all educational levels from pre-school to college. My college degree is general science which I arrived at after 5 years and 5 different majors. A degree as it turns out, almost as valuable and in demand as one in Neo-Bulgarian Mythology. I have been around education for around 40 years and can remember when teaching was a pleasant, happy and creative job and our schools were the same. Now I'm the guy sitting on the porch with an opinion on everything.
