Are Early Retirement Packages Good for Education?

I note that the one common factor when budget cutting becomes necessary  is that teachers are being offered incentives for early retirement.  Only in a bureaucracy do we provide incentives designed to steal away our most experienced and possibly skilled workers who are working in complex jobs from ourselves. Often replacing them with neophytes who are rich in theory un-tempered by reality. A reality that leads to the fact that around 33% of new teachers are in other jobs, outside of education, within 3 years and nearly 50% are gone from the classroom in 5 years.   Cutting off the new green growing tips of the tree of knowledge or pruning unnecessary administrative branches will not stop the tree from bearing fruit, but digging out the old foundational roots most certainly will.

About safrisri

I have been a teacher since 1971 and have taught at all educational levels from pre-school to college. My college degree is general science which I arrived at after 5 years and 5 different majors. A degree as it turns out, almost as valuable and in demand as one in Neo-Bulgarian Mythology. I have been around education for around 40 years and can remember when teaching was a pleasant, happy and creative job and our schools were the same. My writings will reflect on my past mistakes and successes and what my students have taught me about education.
