What is the Purpose of our Schools?

One of our  local school districts has just announced plans to build a new football stadium on the site of a toxic waste dump.  The stated reason for this plan is that all the suburbs have newer excellent facilities for their athletes and the local school athletes deserve the same.  This is a district that still houses students and teachers in buildings over 100 years old while the district offices reside in a downtown high rise.  Perhaps Jesse Ventura the ex-governor of Minnesota whose educational background  was as a  professional wrestler had a better answer to this question.  When  he was asked if he would support building a new stadium for the Minnesota Vikings professional football team .   His answer was “when every school in Minnesota is newer than the old Viking’s stadium,”  I will support building a new stadium.  What is the purpose of a school system?   Instead of a new stadium let’s open at least one  elementary and middle level magnet schools for high performing students and expand Central Academy ( AP/IB High School)  to include areas for students to develop, research, and  enhance their skills in science, math, language and the performing arts. There are have been no new high schools or middle schools built in this district for a long time.   It would be asinine that the newest structure in an aging school system  is an athletic stadium.  Malcolm Forbes said , “The purpose of education is to replace an empty mind with an open one.”  He mentioned nothing about replacing a toxic  empty field with an empty idea!

About safrisri

I have been a teacher since 1971 and have taught at all educational levels from pre-school to college. My college degree is general science which I arrived at after 5 years and 5 different majors. A degree as it turns out, almost as valuable and in demand as one in Neo-Bulgarian Mythology. I have been around education for around 40 years and can remember when teaching was a pleasant, happy and creative job and our schools were the same. My writings will reflect on my past mistakes and successes and what my students have taught me about education.
