If Kids Were Cars


We can all define a car, it has four wheels, seats, windows, doors, transmission trunk , and an engine. And we can argue quite correctly that all cars share certain characteristics.  But we can also agree that not all cars are exactly the same or even have the same purpose.  

Some have large windows that allow the occupant to see clearly the wide world around them and recognize what is ahead others have tinted windows or have thin small windows that limit the view of their surroundings allowing only for a narrow view of things.

In some cars the seats are designed for support and protection and allow for greater risk taking, while others are soft undemanding and simply designed to be easily used or comfortable. Some seats are made of the finest leather that will stand up to hard use and remain usable while others are of cheaper vinyl or cloth and wear out more easily than they might

All cars have wheels but some have great suspensions and strong tires that allow for greater speed and traction than others, some even have four wheel drive that allow the vehicle to go places that many other vehicles can never go.

When it comes to doors some cars have four doors that open wide easily and allow almost anything to come inside while others have only two doors and are sometimes difficult to open and at times difficult to put things into, even in the easiest of circumstances .

Many cars now have a 6 or even 8 speed automatic transmissions that transfer the power of the engine smoothly into forward movement and this allows occupants to give greater attention to any future problems that may occur in front of them. Other cars have only three speeds manual transmissions that must be constantly moved and adjusted. They require ongoing effort to drive, and in some cases require a great deal of effort and practice to simply start moving at all.

Many cars have a large spacious trunk with room for storage of many different things while others barely have the capacity for even the essentials.

Finally the engine in some cars is small, underpowered and barely able to move itself, let alone a full load. While other cars have a strong high revving engine, thirsty for the fuel that makes it go, full of the torque and the horsepower needed move quickly forward and to handle even the most heavy burdens.

Cars come in all shapes and sizes from the slow and plodding to the sleekest of transport. Some cars no matter how many coats of paint you apply or shiny wax you put on them will never be as powerful as other cars. These cars have a valuable and consistent use but they were designed to run on city streets at slow speeds with many fits and starts on a daily basis. Other cars were meant to race down new and unexplored territory filled with bumps and obstacles to overcome. For these faster stronger cars running at full speed is not an option, it is their very nature. A high powered car driving slowly in stop and go traffic, engine idling, transmission constantly shifting into a lower gear, windows covered with the dust of inactivity may soon become indistinguishable from every other car and may even break down totally due to inactivity.

Why is it so easy to see that different cars exist and have different needs and abilities while our schools seem to believe that all students are exactly the same and must all run at the same speed?
