Tarred With The Same Brush

“Tarred with the same Brush,” I have been thinking about this old idiom this AM and it seems to me that this is one of the problems of modern society. A Politician, policeman, teacher, food stamp user, crab fisherman, Congressman, President and so on because they are a member of a certain group are thought to have the same characteristics as the most evil publicized member of that group.

On an individual basis we to often tend to define people not by their whole history but by the one thing they do or say that we disagree with or the one publicized public mistake somewhere in their past

If we are to go forward we have to stop being one issue voters and thinkers or pretty soon another old saying will define us.

If you keep your nose to the grindstone rough,

And keep it down there long enough,

In time you will forget there are such things,

As brooks that babble and birds that sing;

And of these will all your world compose:

Yourself, the grindstone, and your poor old nose.

About safrisri

I was a school teacher until retirement. I have taught at all educational levels from pre-school to college. My college degree is general science which I arrived at after 5 years and 5 different majors. A degree as it turns out, almost as valuable and in demand as one in Neo-Bulgarian Mythology. I have been around education for around 40 years and can remember when teaching was a pleasant, happy and creative job and our schools were the same. Now I'm the guy sitting on the porch with an opinion on everything.
