People Who Got It Right

Some thoughts on elections from the past.

Democracy must be something more than two wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for dinner. …. James Bovard
The reason that last-ditch political maneuvering has become business as usual in Washington is that the actors involved are drunk on blame and are convinced that the voting public is, too. They count on outrage, thereby spreading numbness. They cherish the prospect of partisan fury, thereby inspiring nonpartisan disgust. … Walter Kirn

Ask a man which way he is going to vote, and he will probably tell you. Ask him, however, why, and vagueness is all…. Andrew Luck

Half of the American people never read a newspaper. Half never voted for President. One hopes it is the same half. ….Gore Vidal

A citizen of America will cross the ocean to fight for democracy, but won’t cross the street to vote in a national election. …. Bill Vaughn

Vote for the man who promises least. He’ll be the least disappointing…. Bernard Baruch

Anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that ‘my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge. Isaac Asimov

The best argument against democracy is a five-minute conversation with the average voter…. Winston Churchill

Elections belong to the people. It’s their decision. If they decide to turn their back on the fire and burn their behinds, then they will just have to sit on their blisters….. Abraham Lincoln

As democracy is perfected, the office of president represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart’s desire at last and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron H.L. Mencken

Listen, Peaches, trickery is what humans are all about,” said the voice of Maurice. “They’re so keen on tricking one another all the time that they elect governments to do it for them… Terry Pratchett

I have an idea about voting, how about on every ballot we include “None of the above”. People may laugh at that, but what that is, it is a vote of no confidence in your government and I’m willing to bet that in some elections, ‘None of the Above’ would win. Imagine if you won the election but lost to ‘None of the Above’. Wouldn’t that make you re-think your positions?….. Jesse Ventura

“General Motors, General Mills, General Foods, general ignorance, general apathy, and general cussedness elect presidents and Congressmen and maintain them in power.” Herbert M. Shelton

About safrisri

I have been a teacher since 1971 and have taught at all educational levels from pre-school to college. My college degree is general science which I arrived at after 5 years and 5 different majors. A degree as it turns out, almost as valuable and in demand as one in Neo-Bulgarian Mythology. I have been around education for around 40 years and can remember when teaching was a pleasant, happy and creative job and our schools were the same. My writings will reflect on my past mistakes and successes and what my students have taught me about education.
